The Ivy Yoga School (IYS) is in the Classical Yoga Tradition.

Our in-depth study and teacher training at The Ivy Yoga School emphasizes the importance of staying close to traditional yoga and the parampara lineages. We have studied in the Krishnamacharya and Sivananda lineages. We teach the classical roots of yoga practice and study. Liam, Carroll Ann, and Padmasri bring over 50 combined years of study, practice, and love of yoga. We are deeply committed to diversity, physical and financial accessibility, and inclusion. Our training includes the use of props and modifications for classical yoga postures. We limit enrollment so as to have close contact and engagement with each of our students. The Ivy Yoga School has graduated almost 100 students since 2018.

Students will come away from this training and study feeling confident in teaching asana with precise alignment cues, effective adjustments, and a working knowledge of physical anatomy. Students will be introduced to the philosophy behind the practice. We will read and discuss ancient texts that have stunning relevance to today. We will immerse ourselves in the study, practice and lifestyle of yoga. Our students will be equipped to serve the larger community as yoga teachers and/or mature practitioners.

Content includes:
Asana Study: Asana and their corresponding alignment and energetic patterns will be explored in-depth. We will learn how to observe and experience the body as a pathway to growth and peace. This includes all asanas in the Ashtanga Primary Series and the 300HR Course includes all asanas in the Intermediate Series. Other asanas will also be taught.
Hands-On Teaching Methods: Developing the skills to offer supportive hands-on assists to students without causing harm. Students will also observe and teach in the Mysore setting.
Verbal Teaching Skills: It is essential for the teacher to communicate clearly. This course will help hone the skills needed to guide students through yoga with verbal cues.
Pranayama and Meditation: Yoga moves the practitioner inward towards self-observation. This course will teach classical methods of pranayama and meditation along with their traditional benefits.
Sanskrit and Chanting: We teach correct pronunciation of asana names, traditional mantra and classical sutra recitation.
Anatomy: Understanding the basic anatomy in asana can help fine-tune our ability to observe various bodies in stillness and motion. Our anatomy study will bring attention to the physical aspect of anatomy, and to subtle body alignment. Working with injury and postural propping and modifications are included.
Philosophy: Yoga asana rests in a philosophical context. We will study the traditional teachings of Patanjali’s Classical Yoga Sutras, the Bhagavad Gita, the Hatha Yoga Pradipaka, and the Upanishadic texts. We will discuss how these philosophical themes are relevant for our lives today.
Ayurveda: Ayurveda complements the understanding of the yogic lifestyle. From diet to “dosha”, to practices of seasonal cleansing, and daily routine, Ayurveda is the science of life that brings an individualized approach to the traditional methods of yoga.
